In 2021, overseas shipments of gravel and crushed stone were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 114%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belarus represented the major exporter of gravel and crushed stone in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), creating an 11% share of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gravel and crushed stone exports from Belarus stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Russia (+18.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+4 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest gravel and crushed stone supplier in the CIS, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus stood at +8.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+12.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+25.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+40.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS recorded decline in overseas purchases of gravel and crushed stone, which decreased by -16.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the main importer of gravel and crushed stone in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together comprising a 16% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gravel and crushed stone imports into Russia stood at -14.1%. At the same time, Moldova (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Moldova (+8.7 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -12.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gravel and crushed stone in the CIS, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to -14.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-4.4% per year) and Moldova (+6.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.9%).
