Groundnuts Market Size in CIS

The CIS groundnuts market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, growing by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Groundnuts Production in CIS

In value terms, groundnuts production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 91%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +13.4%).

The average groundnuts yield rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 6.2% against the previous year. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 93% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the groundnuts harvested area in the CIS declined to X ha, which is down by -10% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in CIS

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of ground-nut (in-shell) decreased by -15.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 583%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, groundnuts exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,093% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ground-nut (in-shell) exports, with a CAGR of -3.0% from 2012 to 2022. Tajikistan (-6.3%) and Kazakhstan (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+83 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan and Tajikistan saw its share reduced by -22.9% and -58.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest groundnuts supplier in the CIS, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, groundnuts exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (-4.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, imports of ground-nut (in-shell) in the CIS amounted to X tons, rising by 14% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnuts imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 83% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +88.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 85% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +64.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 50%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
