The CIS hardboard market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. In 2022, Belarus (X cubic meters) represented the largest exporter of hardboard, comprising 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X cubic meters), creating a 32% share of total exports.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hardboard exports, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Belarus (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-26.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest hardboard supplier in the CIS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In Belarus, hardboard exports expanded at an average annual rate of +29.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, increasing by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 35%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per cubic meter), while Russia stood at $X per cubic meter.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+6.3%).

In 2022, the amount of hardboard imported in the CIS expanded rapidly to X cubic meters, growing by 5.5% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hardboard imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X cubic meters) represented the major importer of hardboard, mixing up 48% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X cubic meters), Azerbaijan (X cubic meters), Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) and Belarus (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 43% share of total imports. Moldova (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hardboard imports into Russia stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+12.0%) and Azerbaijan (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2022. Moldova, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.7 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-2.2 p.p.) and Russia (-15.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hardboard in the CIS, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.4% share.

In Russia, hardboard imports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+16.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (-1.9% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year.
