Hazelnut Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS hazelnut market decreased by less than 0.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +69.1% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Azerbaijan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, comprising approx. 83% of total volume. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Azerbaijan totaled +6.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+1.3% per year) and Uzbekistan (+5.2% per year).

The average hazelnut yield rose to X tons per ha in 2021, surging by 4.6% on the year before. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of hazelnuts in the CIS fell modestly to X ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut harvested area increased by +61.9% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 10%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, the amount of hazelnuts exported in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 24% on the year before. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 926%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 1,113%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X tons), generating a 20% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Azerbaijan increased at an average annual rate of +34.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+241.0%), Belarus (+16.9%) and Moldova (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +241.0% from 2012-2021. Armenia (+20 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+4.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Moldova and Belarus saw its share reduced by -8% and -8.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in the CIS, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 2% share.

In Azerbaijan, hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +39.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Armenia (+219.3% per year) and Moldova (+3.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -15.9% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 236%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 240% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 65% of total imports. Armenia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Uzbekistan (14%). Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +27.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+153.5%), Uzbekistan (+19.5%) and Belarus (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +153.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Armenia and Uzbekistan increased by +16 and +14 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in the CIS, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at +23.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Armenia (+172.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+28.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Armenia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
