The shipments of the two major exporters of canned meat, namely Russia and Belarus, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 9.1%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

In 2021, overseas purchases of canned meat increased by 6.1% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of canned meat in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (6.9%), Azerbaijan (6.2%) and Moldova (5.4%). The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each resulted at a 7.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned meat in the CIS, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled -10.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+16.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+9.4% per year).
