Skates Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS skates market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skates production reduced notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 216%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of ice skates and roller skates, when their volume increased by 41% to X tons. In general, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skates exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 96% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest skates supplier in the CIS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at +9.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+2.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+35.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Skates imports soared to X tons in 2021, picking up by 71% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skates imports into Russia stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Belarus (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan and Belarus increased by +1.9 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ice skates and roller skates in the CIS, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports.

In Russia, skates imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.2% per year) and Belarus (-0.4% per year).
