The CIS iodine, fluorine and bromine market declined to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Azerbaijan was the largest exporter of iodine, fluorine and bromine in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2021. Russia (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (6.7%).

Exports from Azerbaijan decreased at an average annual rate of -2.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+38.7%) and Russia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+6.4 p.p.) and Russia (+5.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Azerbaijan (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest iodine, fluorine and bromine supplier in the CIS, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports.

In Azerbaijan, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-3.8% per year) and Belarus (+57.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

Iodine, fluorine and bromine imports reduced to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -9.8% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 137%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Russia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of iodine, fluorine and bromine. At the same time, Belarus (+32.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -11.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
