In 2021, the CIS iron or steel can market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Iron or Steel Cans in CIS
In value terms, iron or steel can production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Iron or steel can exports dropped remarkably to X units in 2021, which is down by -27.3% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 134%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron or steel can exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -16.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X units), creating a 9% share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel cans exports, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. Belarus (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia increased by +56 percentage points.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest iron or steel can supplier in the CIS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +11.7%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 63% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Russia stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-0.2%).
Imports of Iron or Steel Cans
Imports in CIS
In 2021, overseas purchases of iron or steel cans were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iron or steel can imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belarus (X units) was the major importer of iron or steel cans, mixing up 49% of total imports. Moldova (X units) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (11%) and Russia (11%). Uzbekistan (X units) and Armenia (X units) held a little share of total imports.
Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel cans imports, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+16.2%), Kazakhstan (+3.2%) and Moldova (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Armenia (-1.4%) and Russia (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+43 p.p.), Moldova (+7.5 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.2 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -57.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belarus ($X), Moldova ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Armenia, which together accounted for a further 20%.
Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +26.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
