In 2022, the CIS metal wool market increased by 9.3% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight descent. In 2022, shipments abroad of iron or steel wool decreased by -19.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,336% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, metal wool exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 238% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the major exporter of iron or steel wool in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Belarus (11%).

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +27.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+169.1%) and Belarus (+25.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +169.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-3.5 p.p.) and Russia (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest metal wool supplier in the CIS, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 4.8% share of total exports.

In Russia, metal wool exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+308.8% per year) and Belarus (+20.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+51.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of iron or steel wool were imported in the CIS; reducing by -2.4% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal wool imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia was the key importer of iron or steel wool in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 10% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal wool imports into Russia stood at -1.6%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+21.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-1.3%), Moldova (-2.2%) and Kazakhstan (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+6.9 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-12 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel wool in the CIS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.2% share.

In Russia, metal wool imports declined by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-4.8% per year) and Belarus (-1.4% per year).

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
