As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactose exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 52%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the major exporters of lactose and lactose syrup in 2022, reaching near 37% and 36% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), creating a 21% share of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +65.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest lactose supplier in the CIS, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 17% share.
In Russia, lactose exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-8.3% per year) and Moldova (+54.3% per year).

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -20.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-6.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup increased by 8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lactose imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the main importer of lactose and lactose syrup, generating 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), committing a 19% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lactose imports into Russia stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Belarus (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +6.7% from 2012-2022.
