Leather Market Size in CIS

The CIS leather market fell to $X in 2021, shrinking by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leather Production in CIS

In value terms, leather production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leather Exports

Exports in CIS

After six years of decline, shipments abroad of leather increased by 44% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total exports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (7.6%) and Tajikistan (7.1%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest leather supplier in the CIS, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -11.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+7.2% per year) and Belarus (-3.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leather Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2021, overseas purchases of leather decreased by -18.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the major importer of leather, mixing up 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), together committing a 37% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012-2021. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Armenia (-2.3%), Belarus (-3.3%) and Kazakhstan (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Moldova (+3.8 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -8.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest leather importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Moldova ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 3.8%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +5.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
