The CIS lettuce and chicory market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt contraction. Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest lettuce and chicory producing country in the CIS, comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, lettuce and chicory production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), threefold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.3% share.

In Uzbekistan, lettuce and chicory production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kyrgyzstan (+0.3% per year) and Azerbaijan (+47.5% per year).

The average lettuce and chicory yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 18%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of lettuce and chicory in the CIS dropped modestly to X ha, standing approx. at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, shipments abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 44% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 656%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 172% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Armenia (11%), Azerbaijan (8.2%) and Russia (6.6%). Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory exports from Uzbekistan stood at -10.7%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+133.5%), Armenia (+102.5%), Kazakhstan (+70.7%), Belarus (+20.4%) and Russia (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +133.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+50 p.p.), Armenia (+11 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+8.2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-24 p.p.) and Russia (-46.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in the CIS, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan amounted to -7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+19.8% per year) and Armenia (+106.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the major importer of lettuce and chicory, committing 60% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Belarus (11%). Moldova (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory imports into Russia stood at -7.6%. At the same time, Armenia (+147.1%), Kazakhstan (+46.7%), Azerbaijan (+25.5%), Moldova (+20.2%) and Belarus (+18.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +147.1% from 2012-2022. In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in the CIS, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.9% share.

In Russia, lettuce and chicory imports contracted by an average annual rate of -10.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+11.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+26.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
