After two years of growth, the CIS linseed market decreased by -15% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Linseed Production in CIS
In value terms, linseed production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed strong growth. The average linseed yield reached X kg per ha in 2022, picking up by 4.3% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the linseed yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. In 2022, approx. X tons of linseed were exported in the CIS; jumping by 16% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 85%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, linseed exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -10.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, linseed export price increased by +67.2% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+2.3%).
Linseed Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, the amount of linseed imported in the CIS surged to X tons, increasing by 34% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 202%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, linseed imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 147%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the key importer of linseed, mixing up 51% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 29% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (16%). Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +52.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 94% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +40.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+17.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
