Lithium Battery Market Size in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS lithium battery market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 42% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Lithium Battery Production in CIS

In value terms, lithium battery production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Lithium Battery Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2021, overseas shipments of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -2.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 254%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lithium battery exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 217% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the major exporter of lithium cells ans batteries, achieving 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), making up a 30% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery exports from Russia stood at +30.6%. At the same time, Belarus (+74.5%) and Kazakhstan (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +74.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus increased by +27 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest lithium battery supplier in the CIS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports.

In Russia, lithium battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+42.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -16.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Lithium Battery Imports

Imports in CIS

For the sixth year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in overseas purchases of lithium cells ans batteries, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium battery imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 56% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Azerbaijan (8.4%), Belarus (7.3%) and Kazakhstan (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lithium battery imports into Russia stood at +12.6%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+256.0%), Azerbaijan (+45.0%), Belarus (+24.5%) and Kazakhstan (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +256.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Belarus increased by +22, +7.2 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +266.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 5.2%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
