Luggage Market Size in CIS

After two years of decline, the CIS luggage market increased by 14% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together committing 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), making up a 6.2% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +27.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of luggage and handbags, when their volume increased by 49% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia was the key importer of luggage and handbags in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), creating a 24% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+33.2%), Belarus (+14.9%) and Kazakhstan (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-6.3%) and Tajikistan (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+10 p.p.), Belarus (+2.3 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -5.3% and -9.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported luggage and handbags in the CIS, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+7.9% per year) and Belarus (+9.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%.
