Lysine Market Size in CIS

The CIS lysine market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lysine production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof, when their volume increased by 142% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lysine exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key exporter of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lysine exports from Kazakhstan stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Belarus (+25.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+24 p.p.) and Belarus (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -29.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest lysine supplier in the CIS, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, lysine exports increased at an average annual rate of +29.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-3.9% per year) and Belarus (+22.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 54%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After five years of decline, supplies from abroad of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof increased by 36% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lysine imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importer of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (14%). The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+27.8%), Belarus (+24.5%), Uzbekistan (+17.9%) and Azerbaijan (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan (+16 p.p.), Belarus (+12 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -35.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lysine and its esters, and salts thereof in the CIS, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 11% share.

In Russia, lysine imports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+16.3% per year) and Belarus (+14.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 31%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
