Exports in CIS

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard decreased by -57.4% to X units in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 144% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, finishing paper machinery exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 172%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Russia (X units) represented the major exporter of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard, generating 59% of total exports. Belarus (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X units). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a temperate increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Finishing paper machinery imports soared to X units in 2021, rising by 46% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, finishing paper machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 145%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X units), generating a 5.3% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X units), Belarus (X units) and Azerbaijan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to finishing paper machinery imports into Russia stood at -10.6%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+9.8%) and Belarus (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -14.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-32.5% per year) and Belarus (-2.2% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 27%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Azerbaijan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
