Maize Market Size in CIS
The CIS maize market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Maize Production in CIS
In value terms, maize production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 53%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of maize production, accounting for 75% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Armenia (X tons), with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan amounted to +1.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+7.4% per year) and Armenia (+0.8% per year).
The average maize yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.8% on 2021 figures. The yield indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize yield increased by +4.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the maize yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of maize (green) were harvested in the CIS; stabilizing at 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to maize production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Maize Exports
Exports in CIS
In 2022, approx. X tons of maize (green) were exported in the CIS; declining by -3.9% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,108% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 899% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the key exporter of maize (green), creating 71% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Armenia (8.6%) and Belarus (6.2%). Russia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Uzbekistan decreased at an average annual rate of -4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+59.1%), Armenia (+26.9%), Belarus (+6.6%) and Azerbaijan (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +59.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Armenia and Russia increased by +71, +8.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest maize supplier in the CIS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 10% share.
In Uzbekistan, maize exports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+3.1% per year) and Armenia (+24.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Maize Imports
Imports in CIS
Maize imports dropped to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -10.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main importer of maize (green), generating 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), creating a 25% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to maize imports into Russia stood at -3.0%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+134.9%), Moldova (+5.0%) and Kazakhstan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +134.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+7.7 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+3.7 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-1.5 p.p.) and Russia (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported maize (green) in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 5.6% share.
In Russia, maize imports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-2.0% per year) and Moldova (+21.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
