Maize Market Size in CIS
The CIS maize market shrank to $X in 2022, declining by -9.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Maize Production in CIS
In value terms, maize production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of maize production was Russia (X tons), accounting for 72% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Moldova (X tons), eightfold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.5% share.
In Russia, maize production expanded at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Moldova (+2.2% per year) and Belarus (+1.5% per year).
The average maize yield reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -4.6% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of maize were harvested in the CIS; which is down by -4% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to maize production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of maize increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +85.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the key exporter of maize in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), committing a 30% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to maize exports from Russia stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Moldova (+39.8%) and Kazakhstan (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +39.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Moldova (+28 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-31.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Moldova ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Moldova, with a CAGR of +37.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Maize Imports

In 2022, purchases abroad of maize was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Armenia (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented roughly 62% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Russia (12%), Moldova (5.1%) and Tajikistan (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +30.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported maize in the CIS, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 14% share.
In Russia, maize imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+1.7% per year) and Moldova (+24.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +83.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+22.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
