In 2021, the CIS malt market decreased by -0.7% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the market value increased by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.8%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in overseas shipments of malt (not roasted), which increased by 56% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 94%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the major exporter of malt (not roasted), mixing up 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), achieving a 23% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the malt (not roasted) exports, with a CAGR of +48.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+6.3%) and Kazakhstan (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Russia (+62 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan and Belarus saw its share reduced by -9.4% and -52.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in the CIS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
In Russia, malt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+0.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Malt Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, supplies from abroad of malt (not roasted) increased by 7.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, malt imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the major importer of malt (not roasted) in the CIS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together committing a 42% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+10.0%), Kazakhstan (+9.0%), Tajikistan (+6.5%) and Uzbekistan (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. Azerbaijan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Moldova (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +9.5, +6.6 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported malt (not roasted) in the CIS, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 11% share.
In Russia, malt imports plunged by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-0.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (+1.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
