In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the CIS market for meat of camels and other animals, when its value decreased by -0.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of camel and other animal meat production was Russia (X tons), accounting for 97% of total volume. It was followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), with a 1.8% share of total production.

In Russia, camel and other animal meat production increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average camel and other animal meat yield in the CIS contracted modestly to X tons per head, approximately equating 2021. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per head. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the camel and other animal meat yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in the CIS; shrinking by -2% compared with the previous year's figure. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals, when their volume increased by 20% to X tons. Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), achieving a 6% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of meat of camels and other animals. At the same time, Belarus (+29.6%) and Kazakhstan (+24.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +29.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+5.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-9.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in the CIS, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.

In Russia, camel and other animal meat exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+32.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+25.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, purchases abroad of meat of camels and other animals increased by 95% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 562% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 332%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total imports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals imports, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan increased by +76 and +8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in the CIS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 74%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan totaled $X per ton.
