Melon Market Size in CIS
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in the CIS melon market, when its value decreased by -0.4% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Melon Production in CIS
In value terms, melon production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Kazakhstan (X tons) remains the largest melon producing country in the CIS, accounting for 89% of total volume. Moreover, melon production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Kazakhstan stood at +4.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Azerbaijan (-2.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+26.2% per year).
The average melon yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, dropping by -2.8% against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 6.7% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of melons in the CIS reduced modestly to X ha, dropping by -4.5% on the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in CIS
In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of melons, when their volume decreased by -57.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 207%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, melon exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 237% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan was the key exporter of melons in the CIS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up an 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon exports from Uzbekistan stood at +39.9%. At the same time, Russia (+45.0%) and Azerbaijan (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Russia increased by +76 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest melon supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 3.2% share.
In Uzbekistan, melon exports increased at an average annual rate of +42.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-6.5% per year) and Russia (+51.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Melon Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of melons, when their volume decreased by -50.4% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 94%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, melon imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 66%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the main importer of melons in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 43% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 55% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +64.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melons in the CIS, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +6.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+48.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+71.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
