The CIS mineral or aerated water market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Production of Mineral or Aerated Waters in CIS
In value terms, mineral or aerated water production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, mineral or aerated water exports in the CIS declined significantly to X tons, dropping by -27.4% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +84.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the largest exporter of mineral or aerated waters in the CIS, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together comprising a 24% share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mineral or aerated waters exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Armenia (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Armenia (-8.5 p.p.) and Belarus (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest mineral or aerated water supplying countries in the CIS were Russia ($X), Armenia ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.
Armenia, with a CAGR of +7.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Mineral or Aerated Waters
Imports in CIS
In 2022, the amount of mineral or aerated waters imported in the CIS reached X tons, approximately reflecting 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the key importer of mineral or aerated waters, mixing up 54% of total imports. Moldova (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - together made up 6% of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+52.7%), Moldova (+13.7%), Belarus (+10.0%), Kazakhstan (+5.9%) and Azerbaijan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Moldova, Uzbekistan and Belarus increased by +6.1, +2.4 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mineral or aerated waters in the CIS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +6.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+3.1% per year) and Belarus (+7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
