Molasse Market Size in CIS

The CIS molasse market contracted notably to $X in 2022, falling by -18.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molasse production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +4.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. In 2022, the amount of molasses exported in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 39% on the year before. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, molasse exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), creating a 29% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of molasses. At the same time, Belarus (+24.5%) and Moldova (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -22.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest molasse supplying countries in the CIS were Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Moldova ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +29.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of molasses were imported in the CIS; growing by 167% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molasse imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Azerbaijan (X tons) represented the key importer of molasses, generating 52% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together committing a 46% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Azerbaijan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of molasses. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+104.6%) and Belarus (+45.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +104.6% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-18.2%) and Kazakhstan (-22.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan increased by +31, +15, +13 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molasses in the CIS, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 12% share.

In Azerbaijan, molasse imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-17.9% per year) and Belarus (+51.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 87%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
