Mushroom And Truffle Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS mushroom and truffle market decreased by -4.9% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a modest expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of mushroom and truffle production, comprising approx. 73% of total volume. Moreover, mushroom and truffle production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia totaled +34.7%.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, approx. X tons of mushrooms and truffles were exported in the CIS; with an increase of 25% on the year before. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 85%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belarus represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), creating a 27% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mushroom and truffle exports from Belarus stood at +11.9%. At the same time, Russia (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Russia (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest mushroom and truffle supplier in the CIS, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In Belarus, mushroom and truffle exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-1.5%).

Imports in CIS

In 2022, purchases abroad of mushrooms and truffles was finally on the rise to reach X tons after eight years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of mushrooms and truffles, comprising 74% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (9.9%). Moldova (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -9.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+37.7%) and Kazakhstan (+22.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +37.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+9.3 p.p.), Belarus (+4.1 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-16.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mushrooms and truffles in the CIS, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -8.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+20.0% per year) and Belarus (-2.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
