Mustard Seed Market Size in CIS

The CIS mustard seed market reduced remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -26.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded noticeable growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In Russia, mustard seed production increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-2.7% per year) and Moldova (-4.3% per year).

The average mustard seed yield contracted to X kg per ha in 2022, waning by -10.5% on 2021. The yield indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mustard seed yield increased by +50.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of mustard seed in the CIS dropped to X ha, with a decrease of -2.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 88% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of mustard seed decreased by -3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, mustard seed exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), achieving a 5.1% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mustard seed exports, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest mustard seed supplier in the CIS, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.

In Russia, mustard seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+5.0% per year) and Moldova (+21.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, purchases abroad of mustard seed was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mustard seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Moldova (X tons) and Russia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 79% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mustard seed importing markets in the CIS were Moldova ($X), Russia ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together comprising 85% of total imports.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
