The CIS nails and tacks market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. In 2022, shipments abroad of nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples decreased by -26% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 105%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, nails and tacks exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 71%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the main exporter of nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples, generating 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 24% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +22.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+30.1%) and Belarus (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +25 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +18.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep slump. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
In 2022, imports of nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples in the CIS amounted to X tons, approximately reflecting 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Azerbaijan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+30.2%), Uzbekistan (+17.7%), Azerbaijan (+17.4%), Kazakhstan (+5.3%), Belarus (+2.4%) and Moldova (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan (+8 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+3.2 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.6 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -17.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples in the CIS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 8.1% share.
In Russia, nails and tacks imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+2.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+2.4% per year).

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
