For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in shipments abroad of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures, which decreased by -57.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 57%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +59.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures supplying countries in the CIS were Uzbekistan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +56.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in CIS

Aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures imports expanded sharply to X tons in 2022, surging by 13% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together committing a 29% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+44.1%), Uzbekistan (+34.8%), Kyrgyzstan (+12.9%) and Belarus (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +44.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +11 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures in the CIS, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +5.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+11.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+37.8% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
