Natural bitumen and asphalt exports fell markedly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -86.1% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 259% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 842% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 95% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), making up a 5.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of -31.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest natural bitumen and asphalt supplier in the CIS, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
In Russia, natural bitumen and asphalt exports decreased by an average annual rate of -29.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-29.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (-34.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -51.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 370% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Natural Bitumen and Asphalt
Imports in CIS
Natural bitumen and asphalt imports dropped to X tons in 2021, declining by -11.9% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 186%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 107%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), creating an 8.5% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+17.2%) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-7.3%), Azerbaijan (-8.6%) and Belarus (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Tajikistan increased by +41 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported natural bitumen and asphalt in the CIS, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +5.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Azerbaijan (-9.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (-13.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -17.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
