Newsprint Market Size in CIS

The CIS newsprint market fell notably to $X in 2022, reducing by -22.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, newsprint production dropped rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 46%. In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of newsprint, when their volume increased by 7.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to newsprint exports from Russia stood at -1.8%. At the same time, Belarus (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +3.9% from 2012-2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest newsprint supplier in the CIS, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In Russia, newsprint exports declined by an average annual rate of -6.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -11.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-0.2%).

Imports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of newsprint imported in the CIS declined to X tons, waning by -4.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, newsprint imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) were the largest importers of newsprint in 2022, reaching near 32% and 29% of total imports, respectively. Belarus (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (8.7%), Azerbaijan (7.9%) and Moldova (4.7%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest newsprint importing markets in the CIS were Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), together accounting for 75% of total imports. Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +1.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Moldova ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Tajikistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
