Soft Drink Market Size in CIS

The CIS soft drink market reached $X in 2021, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of soft drinks, which increased by 28% to X litres in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X litres) represented the main exporter of soft drinks, comprising 73% of total exports. Belarus (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X litres). All these countries together held near 22% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the soft drinks exports, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+17.8%) and Kazakhstan (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Russia (+18 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest soft drink supplier in the CIS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +16.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+14.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per litre), while Belarus ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X litres of soft drinks were imported in the CIS; increasing by 33% against 2020 figures. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, soft drink imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X litres) and Kazakhstan (X litres) were the key importers of soft drinks in 2021, recording approx. 33% and 27% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X litres), Kyrgyzstan (X litres), Moldova (X litres), Uzbekistan (X litres) and Azerbaijan (X litres), together committing a 37% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +77.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 73% of total imports. Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +67.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per litre in 2021, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while Moldova ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
