In 2022, the amount of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exported in the CIS stood at X tons, surging by 9.9% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier in the CIS.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports in the CIS dropped modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -3.8% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 86%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 72% of total imports in 2022. Azerbaijan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 21% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+21.4%), Kazakhstan (+10.4%), Belarus (+8.2%) and Azerbaijan (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+4.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nutmeg, mace and cardamoms in the CIS, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+41.1% per year) and Belarus (-3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price decreased by -4.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+35.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
