In 2021, the amount of olives prepared or preserved exported in the CIS soared to X tons, picking up by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 193%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved olive exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 122%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) represented the main exporter of olives prepared or preserved, comprising 65% of total exports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Armenia (12%).

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the olives prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+35.0%) and Armenia (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus (+54 p.p.) and Russia (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Armenia saw its share reduced by -57% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.9% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Russia dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (4.7%). The following importers - Moldova (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - each recorded a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved olive imports into Russia stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+8.1%), Moldova (+4.7%) and Armenia (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012-2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +1.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported olives prepared or preserved in the CIS, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+0.1% per year) and Kazakhstan (+7.2% per year).
