The CIS onion and shallot market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a mild contraction. In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of onions and shallots, when their volume increased by 38% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 142%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons), distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the key exporters of onions and shallots, together committing 95% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +61.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in the CIS, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 9.7% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 105%. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 86% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), constituting a 4.6% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +160.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported onions and shallots in the CIS, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.1% share.

In Russia, onion and shallot imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+8.4% per year) and Belarus (+1.6% per year).
