Russia was the largest exporter of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X tons), making up a 29% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X kg) and Belarus (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to x-ray examination preparations exports from Russia stood at +15.0%. At the same time, Armenia (+127.7%) and Belarus (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +127.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest x-ray examination preparations supplier in the CIS, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 3.1% share.

In Russia, x-ray examination preparations exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Armenia (+102.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (-14.5% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+16.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations increased by 23% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Russia represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 67% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (7.1%) and Azerbaijan (6%). The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - each finished at a 6.3% share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+31.0%), Armenia (+20.1%) and Belarus (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Armenia increased by +5.5, +5.5, +3.2 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in the CIS, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 7.5% share.
