Orange Market Size in CIS

The CIS orange market totaled $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption saw a perceptible reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Orange Production in CIS

In value terms, orange production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +7.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 93%. Azerbaijan (X tons) remains the largest orange producing country in the CIS, accounting for 69% of total volume. Moreover, orange production in Azerbaijan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tajikistan (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Azerbaijan stood at +14.4%.

The average orange yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the orange yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of oranges production in the CIS contracted modestly to X ha, shrinking by -4.6% on the previous year. The total harvested area indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, orange harvested area increased by +99.5% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to orange production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of oranges exported in the CIS soared to X tons, with an increase of 64% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orange exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) dominates exports structure, together making up 91% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Armenia (with a CAGR of +77.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 93% of total exports. These countries were followed by Armenia, which accounted for a further 6.2%.

Among the main exporting countries, Armenia, with a CAGR of +103.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+14.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of oranges increased by 0.3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, orange imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 5% share of total imports. The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons), Armenia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to orange imports into Russia stood at -1.1%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+33.5%), Armenia (+10.7%) and Azerbaijan (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+1.9 p.p.), Armenia (+1.9 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -5.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oranges in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 5.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-1.4% per year) and Azerbaijan (+16.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 8.5% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Belarus ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Armenia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
