In 2021, the CIS patent leather market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. Exports in CIS

Patent leather exports fell remarkably to X square meters in 2021, shrinking by -24.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 304%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, patent leather exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 214% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X square meters, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X square meters) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +29.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+33.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012-2021. Russia (+88 p.p.) and Belarus (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest patent leather supplier in the CIS, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports.

In Russia, patent leather exports increased at an average annual rate of +28.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per square meter, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price saw a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 165% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per square meter), while Belarus amounted to $X per square meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.6%).

After four years of decline, supplies from abroad of patent leather, patent laminated leather and metallised leather increased by 65% to X square meters in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 212% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, patent leather imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Moldova (X square meters) was the key importer of patent leather, patent laminated leather and metallised leather, making up 53% of total imports. Belarus (X square meters) held a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (10%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X square meters) and Kazakhstan (X square meters) - each reached a 3.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +51.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest patent leather importing markets in the CIS were Moldova ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 97% share of total imports. Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 2.2%.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per square meter), while Azerbaijan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+15.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
