Pear Market Size in CIS

The CIS pear market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Pear Production in CIS

In value terms, pear production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), with a combined 78% share of total production. These countries were followed by Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Moldova, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average yield of pears in the CIS stood at X tons per ha, growing by 8.1% compared with 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. The level of yield peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of pears in the CIS contracted to X ha, with a decrease of -7.4% on 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 4.3% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of pears was finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 334%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 195% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) represented the largest exporter of pears, making up 83% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pear exports from Belarus stood at +27.9%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+46.6%) and Azerbaijan (+23.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +46.6% from 2012-2021. Kyrgyzstan (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Azerbaijan saw its share reduced by -4.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest pear supplier in the CIS, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Belarus, pear exports increased at an average annual rate of +23.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+22.7% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+40.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 46% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of pears increased by 6.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importer of pears in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 30% share, followed by Kazakhstan (8.1%).

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+21.5%) and Kazakhstan (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+26 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -29.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pears in the CIS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -8.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+21.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+4.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 8.1%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
