Russia (X tons) remains the largest dry peas producing country in the CIS, comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, dry peas production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia stood at +4.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+9.2% per year) and Belarus (+2.7% per year).
In 2021, the average yield of peas (dry) in the CIS shrank modestly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -3.3% against the year before. The yield indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas yield increased by +20.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of peas (dry) production in the CIS shrank modestly to X ha, which is down by -2.9% compared with 2020. The total harvested area indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dry peas harvested area increased by +3.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS
In 2021, exports of peas (dry) in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 61% compared with the year before. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, dry peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Russia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+252.6%) and Kazakhstan (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +252.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-4.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in the CIS, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +7.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+16.1% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+252.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of peas (dry) were imported in the CIS; jumping by 104% on 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, dry peas imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Kyrgyzstan represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 61% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each reached a 7.6% share of total imports.
Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) imports, with a CAGR of +46.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+26.4%) and Belarus (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tajikistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-1.4%), Russia (-2.1%) and Uzbekistan (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+52 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+7.1 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-8 p.p.), Tajikistan (-11 p.p.), Azerbaijan (-14.6 p.p.) and Russia (-24.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (dry) in the CIS, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 7.5% share.
In Kyrgyzstan, dry peas imports increased at an average annual rate of +45.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+1.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (+16.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
