In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the CIS green peas market, when its value decreased by -6.7% to $X. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The country with the largest volume of green peas production was Russia (X tons), comprising approx. 85% of total volume. Moreover, green peas production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Moldova (X tons), with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia stood at +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-6.3% per year) and Moldova (-1.5% per year).

The average green peas yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -5% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green peas production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of peas (green) increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,321% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, green peas exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 593%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the key exporter of peas (green), mixing up 74% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to green peas exports from Russia stood at -14.1%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+22.0%) and Kazakhstan (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2022. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in the CIS, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at +9.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-16.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+44.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -22.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 214% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+18.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of peas (green) decreased by -20.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green peas imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 67%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) were the key importers of peas (green) in the CIS, together making up 69% of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +90.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (green) in the CIS, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 3.1% share.
