Peat Market Size in CIS

After three years of growth, the CIS peat market decreased by -X% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the two major exporters of peat, namely Belarus and Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of peat decreased by -X% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, peat imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the main importers of peat in the CIS, together recording near X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Moldova (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together making up a X% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (-X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
