Metal Permanent Magnet Market Size in CIS
The CIS metal permanent magnet market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +84.5% against 2015 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Metal Permanent Magnet Production in CIS
In value terms, metal permanent magnet production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -12.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Metal Permanent Magnet Exports
Exports in CIS
In 2022, approx. X tons of metal permanent magnets were exported in the CIS; standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, metal permanent magnet exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belarus represented the major exporter of metal permanent magnets in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), mixing up a 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kazakhstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal permanent magnet exports from Belarus stood at +61.7%. At the same time, Moldova (+140.0%), Kazakhstan (+29.8%) and Russia (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +140.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+61 p.p.), Moldova (+2.8 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-67.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest metal permanent magnet supplier in the CIS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +2.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+50.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+28.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Metal Permanent Magnet Imports
Imports in CIS
After six years of growth, purchases abroad of metal permanent magnets decreased by -0.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, metal permanent magnet imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), mixing up a 4.6% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal permanent magnet imports into Russia stood at +9.2%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+78.5%), Uzbekistan (+10.5%), Belarus (+7.9%) and Kazakhstan (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +78.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+4.3 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-4.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported metal permanent magnets in the CIS, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 2.4% share.
In Russia, metal permanent magnet imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+1.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (+13.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -18.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+28.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
