Persimmon Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS persimmon market increased by 2.4% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a mild contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Persimmon Production in CIS

In value terms, persimmon production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 19%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Azerbaijan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons), with a combined 100% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average persimmon yield in the CIS contracted slightly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2020. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 4.9%. Over the period under review, the persimmon yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The persimmon harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2021, with a decrease of -1.8% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to persimmon production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, exports of persimmons in the CIS contracted slightly to X tons, reducing by -3.4% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), committing a 17% share of total exports.

Azerbaijan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the persimmons exports, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. Uzbekistan (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Azerbaijan (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In Azerbaijan, persimmon exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+10.3%).

Imports in CIS

In 2021, persimmon imports in the CIS contracted to X tons, with a decrease of -4.3% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +19.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 79% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Belarus (6.1%). Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+138.6%) and Belarus (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +138.6% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Armenia (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in the CIS, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 6.9% share.

In Russia, persimmon imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+6.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (-5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
