For the fourth consecutive year, the CIS sodium phosphates market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of phosphates of mono- or di-sodium imported in the CIS expanded modestly to X tons, with an increase of 3.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 143%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sodium phosphates imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 126%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 80% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (7.3%). Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the phosphates of mono- or di-sodium imports, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012 to 2021. Kyrgyzstan (-2.3%), Kazakhstan (-3.9%) and Belarus (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+28 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus saw its share reduced by -3.6%, -8.9% and -14.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphates of mono- or di-sodium in the CIS, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +16.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-2.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (+4.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton.
