Platinum Market Size in CIS

The CIS platinum market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, which is down by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, platinum exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 90%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Russia (X tons), together reaching 99% of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the platinum exports, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest platinum supplier in the CIS.

In Russia, platinum exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per kg in 2021, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to -3.5% per year.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, approx. X tons of platinum were imported in the CIS; jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 355% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, platinum imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 233%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons), distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X kg), Russia (X kg), Kazakhstan (X kg) and Azerbaijan (X kg) were the largest importers of platinum, together mixing up 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +57.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest platinum importing markets in the CIS were Uzbekistan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising 94% of total imports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, which together accounted for a further 6.2%.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +82.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per kg in 2021, with an increase of 64% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 417%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per kg), while Azerbaijan ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+17.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
