In 2022, the CIS polycarbonate market decreased by -0.1% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 197%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Russia (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total exports in 2022.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polycarbonates (in primary forms) exports, with a CAGR of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia decreased by -1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest polycarbonate supplier in the CIS.

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -17% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polycarbonate export price increased by +59.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 92%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2022, purchases abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of polycarbonates (in primary forms) in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2022. Belarus (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (7.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to polycarbonate imports into Russia stood at -7.5%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+26.4%) and Belarus (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+24 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+7.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -33.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polycarbonates (in primary forms) in the CIS, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -6.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+15.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+27.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 56%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
