In 2022, the CIS polycarbonate market decreased by -0.1% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) decreased by -18.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 197%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polycarbonates (in primary forms) exports, with a CAGR of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. In 2022, purchases abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importer of polycarbonates (in primary forms) in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2022. Belarus (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (7.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to polycarbonate imports into Russia stood at -7.5%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+26.4%) and Belarus (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+24 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+7.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -33.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polycarbonates (in primary forms) in the CIS, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -6.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+15.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+27.1% per year).

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 56%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
