The CIS polyethylene in primary forms market reached $X in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in overseas shipments of polyethylene in primary forms, which increased by 4.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Russia was the main exporter of polyethylene in primary forms in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Azerbaijan (8.4%) and Belarus (7%).

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polyethylene in primary forms exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+16 p.p.) and Russia (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Azerbaijan and Belarus saw its share reduced by -4.2% and -18.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest polyethylene in primary forms supplier in the CIS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +13.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (-4.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+12.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 55% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Belarus ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of polyethylene in primary forms decreased by -2.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the key importer of polyethylene in primary forms, generating 53% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Belarus (12%) and Uzbekistan (6.4%). Azerbaijan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+43.9%), Armenia (+11.8%) and Kazakhstan (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +43.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-1.4%) and Azerbaijan (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+7 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+6.4 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Azerbaijan and Russia saw its share reduced by -4% and -13.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polyethylene in primary forms in the CIS, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 13% share.

In Russia, polyethylene in primary forms imports declined by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+0.3% per year) and Belarus (-2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 51% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
