After three years of growth, overseas shipments of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -5.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 112%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 72%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), comprising an 8.3% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +30.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+62.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +62.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+37 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-39.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest polypropylene in primary forms supplier in the CIS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports.
In Russia, polypropylene in primary forms exports increased at an average annual rate of +24.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+66.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -15.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of polypropylene in primary forms were imported in the CIS; picking up by 10% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +95.0% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 41% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together mixing up a 51% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 84% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +18.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -8.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 51%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
