Potato Chips Market Size in CIS

The CIS potato chips market was estimated at $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, potato chips exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 101%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Russia was the major exporter of potato chips in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), making up a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - each finished at a 3.8% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+306.4%), Kazakhstan (+44.0%) and Belarus (+32.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +306.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus and Uzbekistan increased by +11 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest potato chips supplier in the CIS, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 32% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 1.8% share.

In Russia, potato chips exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+51.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+33.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the seventh year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of potato chips, which increased by 43% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kyrgyzstan was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 38% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Belarus (16%), Russia (14%), Uzbekistan (5.3%) and Azerbaijan (4.7%). Moldova (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Kyrgyzstan increased at an average annual rate of +58.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+81.4%), Belarus (+16.7%), Kazakhstan (+12.9%), Moldova (+9.5%) and Azerbaijan (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +81.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+36 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+5.3 p.p.) and Belarus (+4.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Azerbaijan (-2.2 p.p.) and Russia (-45 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Kyrgyzstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 65% share of total imports. Russia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +90.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
