In 2021, overseas shipments of potato starch decreased by -2.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato starch exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belarus represented the largest exporter of potato starch in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), mixing up a 21% share of total exports.
Exports from Belarus decreased at an average annual rate of -3.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2021. Russia (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -13.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest potato starch supplier in the CIS, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 39%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.5%).

Imports in CIS
In 2021, overseas purchases of potato starch increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, potato starch imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of potato starch, constituting 59% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Belarus (12%) and Kazakhstan (11%).
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+5.6%), Uzbekistan (+4.3%) and Kazakhstan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +14 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potato starch in the CIS, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 11% share.
In Russia, potato starch imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+5.7% per year) and Belarus (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
